Welcome to the dental profession! Our home study course have helped dental assistant trainees and individuals from across the state interested in a dental assisting career to successfully pass the three state of Iowa dental assisting exams.

If you do not have employment as a dental assistant but are interested in the dental assisting field, contact us before enrolling in any course so we can discuss your personal goals and confirm eligibility for our program. Email [email protected].

Our home study courses include all necessary course materials, online lecture, study guides for infection control and radiology, online exams, with remediation and unlimited retakes if necessary.

To be registered as a dental assistant in the State of Iowa, a DAT or individual must pass the jurisprudence and infection control/hazardous materials exams. During the trainee period, the assistant may also become qualified in radiology, but this is not required for initial registration. If it is anticipated the assistant will be taking radiographs during their career, we encourage them to take the radiology exam during their first year on trainee status.

If you plan on taking the exams through us, you should not purchase the IDB study guideWe will give you everything they include plus more and will support you throughout the process.

We strongly recommend you take these courses one at a time. Information on each course is shown below.

Dental Assistant Reinstatement or Out of State Dental Assistants

Dental assistants who are seeking reinstatement of their registration or who are from out of state but seeking Iowa dental assisting registration, may be directed by the IDB to take one, two or all three of the home study courses and/or state assisting exams in one of three topics - jurisprudence, infection control and radiology.  IDB requirements depend on individual circumstances. Our home study courses and online proctored exams meet the IDB requirements. You will receive continuing education credit for the courses. Please contact us at [email protected] PRIOR to enrolling so we can make sure you are in the correct course.

Dental Assistants Seeking Radiology Qualification

Course Information

The courses will remain active for 10 days from the date you enroll and pay. If for some reason you need additional time, let us know and you can be enrolled for one 3-day extension at no cost during the 30 days following your initial enrollment date.

  • Jurisprudence is pretty straightforward and usually the course most DAT's take first. This exam is open book. The DAT needs to have a printed copy of the Iowa Administrative Code (650). A pdf of the document is available in the resources section of the course. Running time of the course is just under 2 hours with no breaks. The link to the course can be found below.
  • Infection Control/Hazardous Materials can be overwhelming because there is so much to learn! This is another course that should be taken after the DAT has a few weeks of experience with their dental team. Having a practical understanding of the basic protocols of disinfection, sterilization, PPE's and more, allows what we are teaching to make more sense. The running time of the course is 180 minutes with no breaks. Most DAT's complete the course and study guide in 3.5 to 4 hours depending on your learning style. The study guide follows the IDB format and is fill in the blank and completing notes. The link to the course is below.
  • Radiology is not required for registration as a dental assistant. It is an additional qualification that can be taken during the DAT period or after becoming a RDA. The radiology home study course and exam can be tough if the DAT has no background in dentistry or radiology. DAT's usually do better with this course after they have experience with radiology technique, terminology and x-ray unit. The running length of the course is 188 minutes with no breaks. Most DAT's complete the course & study guide in 3.5 to 4 hours but some take longer depending on their learning style. The study guide is primarily fill in the blank. The link to the course can be found below.

Exam Requirements

The Impact Dental Training jurisprudence, infection control and radiology courses include an online proctored exam at no additional fee. The exams can be taken at any point in the trainee process.

All online exams are 25 randomly generated questions and require 75% to pass. If jurisprudence, infection control or radiology exam retakes are necessary, they are free of charge with our course. Remediation is also available if needed.

When requesting an appointment for your exam from IDB, the DAT will be required to submit their Impact Dental Training home study course completion certificate and an attestation form.

Once you pass our jurisprudence, infection control or radiology exam, the trainee will be able to download their exam score certificate. This document will be required by the IDB when applying for the dental assistant registration and/or radiology qualification along with the exam score certificate.
