Soft Tissue Diode Laser Certification Courses for Dentists and Hygienists
We now have two types of IDB approved online courses that have been adapted from our very popular hands on course that has trained many dentists and hygienists over the years.
Our online laser certification courses are basic technique courses that leads to certification with the soft tissue diode laser for dentists and hygienists. With years of experience, Dr. Swett gives practical information for incorporating laser dentistry in your office as a benefit to you, your patients and practice.
The course is designed for offices who are considering the purchase of a laser, who have recently jumped into laser dentistry or those who would like to increase the use of the diode laser in their practice. Procedures covered in this course are those Dr. Swett used daily to improve patient comfort, treatment outcomes, productivity or expand the range of services provided in the office. Laser physics, safety and mechanics are included. Specific treatment protocols are given.
Our blended and online laser certification courses are similar to the certification course Dr. Swett provides to the faculty and graduate students at the University of Iowa. Our online courses have added information and techniques valuable to the general practitioner.
OPTION 1:
Our 100% online Soft Tissue Laser Certification course has 6 hours of online didactic training followed by a 50 question exam. The online portion of the course meets the minimum IDB training requirements for laser dentistry. There is a course specific to dentists and another for dental hygienists. Dental hygienists should be working in an office with an experienced laser dentist to enroll in the course.
A 50 question exam with a score of 80% or higher is required for completion of the online course. CEU documentation can be printed or downloaded upon completion.
For Dentists, an optional 3.0 clinical CEU component is included for those wanting to complete the certification process by submitting 5 clinical cases for review by Dr. Swett. A phone, Zoom or personal consultation will be arranged to answer all questions and to review the cases submitted.
For Hygienists, an optional 3.0 clinical CEU component is included for those wanting to complete the certification process by submitting 5 clinical cases for review by Dr. Swett. A phone, Zoom or personal consultation will be arranged to review the cases submitted.
OPTION 2:
Since Dr. Swett retired from private practice in 2022, the blended Soft Tissue Laser Certification course requires the cooperation and use of an office of the sponsoring dentist. If you are interested in cooperating with a course and allowing other dentists and hygienists to come to your office for training, contact [email protected] for further information.
This blended format has worked well for offices with multiple providers wanting hands-on, in person laser instruction, study clubs and/or larger multi location offices. Dentists from smaller offices have also combined their training at one location.
With this option, Dr. Swett comes to the office of a cooperating dentist and trains you on your own laser. This option requires 4 or more dentists/dental hygienists to be scheduled. A ratio of 1 laser per 2 participants is ideal but 1 to 4 can be accommodated.
The course begins with 6 hours of online didactic training followed by a 50 question exam. The online portion of the course meets the minimum IDB training requirements for laser dentistry. A 50 question exam with a score of 80% or higher is required for completion of the online course. CEU documentation can be printed or downloaded upon completion.
Included in the blended laser certification course fees will be an in person, hands-on lab training course and oral check off for an additional 3.0 CEU's. Dental hygienists must hold a current Iowa hygiene license if participating in the hygiene partnering portion of the lab.
Due to the hands on portion of the course, the class size is limited and enrollment must be closely monitored. If interested, contact [email protected] for more specifics. No refunds will be issued if you enroll in this course and do not attend the lab training for any reason. A travel surcharge may apply depending on location and number of participants.
Both courses are approved for all team members but only dentists and hygienists can be certified in laser dentistry. Dental assistants are welcome to take the online course but will not be certified in laser dentistry.
Contact us at [email protected] if you have questions prior to enrolling.
Laser Safety for the Dental Team Initial - 1.5 CEU

This includes non-clinical personnel. Basic laser physics, safety protocols, PPE, signage requirement, laser emergencies and more are included.
Laser Safety for the Dental Team Review - 1 CEU
This course is for teams with experience in laser dentistry and need an annual review course or who have previously taken a laser safety course from another provider.
